I have had the good fortune of a visit from Trout & Salmon magazine who wanted to feature grayling fishing on the Dee, based around one of my courses.

With their kind permission, I am reproducing it here for the benefit of those who may have missed the February 2008 issue. Please click here to read more.

One of the biggest names worldwide in angling today, Hardy Greys have launched an Academy with the aim of increasing the availability & quality of game angling tuition to both experienced and novice anglers.

"Each region of Britain has a dedicated instructor and we are delighted that Louis has been chosen to represent North Wales. His expertise and wide experience makes him the ideal choice.

As well as offering the usual personal instruction, he will be seen at fishery open days and game fairs assisting Hardy Grey dealers. This will either be by assisting people who wish to try out the new range of rods, reels & lines or by helping anyone with a particular problem."

We consider it a real honour to be selected.

Additional Teaching Aid...
We have now included in our tools of the trade, a top of the range Sony DVD digital camcorder.

We can now film your casting and give an instant playback which will hopefully show all your good points !

It's so much more beneficial to SEE where you might be going wrong than to have someone keep telling you, no matter how professionally.

The other benefit is, that because it records directly onto a DVD disc, you can take away a permanent record of your achievements. This might just be casting or actually fishing if on a long enough session. It lasts 30 minutes and is a superb picture quality.

Already, many of our clients have said just how helpful it was.

GRAYLING COURSES..
..on the beautiful Welsh Dee
During the Autumn it is natural that we turn our attention to the " Lady of the Stream", and we are in the process of organising courses to be held in September, October, November & December.

These will be held on the beautiful Welsh Dee in the Vale of Llangollen, which for many years has been classed as the best grayling water in Britain. In fact, this is the site for regular European Grayling Championships.

Two options will be available: -

2 DAY RESIDENTIAL
Based at the historic Chainbridge Hotel, Llangollen with its magnificent views over the Dee. The accent will be very firmly on actual fishing but some time at the hotel will be devoted to the grayling, grayling behaviour and fishing techniques. An evening session on flydressing can be included if considered welcome.

Flyfishing will be the main consideration but trotting will be included if required, with float tackle provided.

This course will be suitable for all abilities and actual casting tuition, if required, will take place on the water, on a one to one basis.

Fishing time will be maximised with dry, wet, standard nymph and Czech nymphing methods covered in detail.

Hardy Greys tackle will be available on loan, free of charge if required.

This course will cost £220 and includes 1 nights en-suite accommodation, full Welsh breakfast, Dinner with a la carte menu, 2 packed lunches, flies if necessary and fishing permits. (This is on the basis of at least 2 people. add £50 for a solo course).

* accommodation will be available for non - participating partners at preferential terms.

SINGLE DAYS
Based on waters as above with the same techniques covered.

All information and necessary instruction will be given at the waterside to maximise fishing time. When confident with your preferred methods, you will be guided to suitable areas of the river and left to fish unhindered, except for courtesy visits to check on your well being.

These days will cost £100 and includes a packed lunch, flies if necessary and fishing permit.

Hardy Greys tackle will be available on loan, free of charge if required.

* To ensure the best personal attention, places will be limited and fill up fairly quickly, so if you wish to reserve a place, please contact us either by phone or e-mail ( see Tuition & Services page for tick boxes.)

Look forward to meeting you !

NEW COURSES FOR 2008

Following the success of the grayling courses we are greeting the new trout season with
"The Art of the Wet Fly"

Wet fly fishing is often a misunderstood and badly practiced method which can be extremely effective in the early part of the season , before thoughts turn seriously to the dry fly.

Let us give you the opportunity to learn the classic techniques of both up and downstream presentation using traditional spider patterns and the wonderfully effective Clyde style flies. Certain types of rod & line will bring the best out of this technique and we can supply these if your own outfits are not entirely suitable.

As with the grayling courses above, we will be on the beautiful Welsh Dee in the Vale of Llangollen where this interesting & productive method is well suited but lessons learned can be applied to the majority of freestone waters.

Dependant on demand, courses can be either single day or over 2 days with a superb overnight stay at the Chainbridge Hotel ( see details in the grayling section above). We can then introduce you to the dressing methods of these classic patterns !

We intend to run courses in March, April, May and June on dates to suit you and the numbers of participants will be tailored to give you the maximum attention & enjoyment.

The cost will be similar to the grayling courses but can be modified if different dining arrangements are required.

  • to ensure the best personal attention, places will be limited and fill up fairly quickly, so if you wish to reserve a place or get more information, please contact us either by phone or e-mail.

Tight lines for the new season and we look forward to meeting you !

FLYDRESSING COURSES

When fishing seasons draw to a close it’s time to think seriously about fly dressing and the need to fill our boxes with killer patterns for next year !

Many anglers, particularly those new to our wonderful sport, don’t have the knowledge to do this so will continue spending small fortunes on their favourite patterns…

I can assure them that there’s really nothing difficult to making your own as long as you get a good grounding in the basic techniques and to do that means attending a short course.

Many fisheries have the facilities to run their own courses but don’t have anyone capable of  delivering the tuition but we can help. Why not ask your fishery to consider this.

Another alternative which works well is for a group of interested people to approach us with a view to holding a course at a pub, club or any suitable venue  - we are quite willing to travel a reasonable distance..

And finally, the ultimate solution  where I could teach you in your own home  on a one–to-one basis, or as an alternative, you could come to me !

So you see, there are several ways that you could learn the basics of this absorbing art  and I guarantee that you will then want to get deeper & deeper into it – it really is great fun & it saves you money !

"LET'S FISH THE CLYDE"

……is the title of a superb book by Robert C.Sharp which was a local publication in 1973, in Motherwell. It tells all you would need to know about the river, the many classic fly patterns of the area and most importantly, the methods used to catch the many beautiful trout and grayling.

Sadly, you are unlikely to find a copy but at the time of his death in 1984, he had just completed the manuscript of his second book “ Let’s Fish Again”. His widow, Isobel, wanted to see his efforts into print, as Bert himself had planned so we have her to thank for its publication. It has all the content of the first book plus reminiscences of his angling life – a superb and informative read. I believe this would be available through Coch-y-Bonddu books.

So how might this affect you?....

You will see from this site that I hold wet fly fishing in the highest regard and many who come to me for tuition become likewise afflicted. It is a highly enjoyable and effective technique, steeped in tradition which is surely part of the attraction of our wonderful sport.

Those with access to suitable waters such as the Welsh Dee will doubtless practice it there with great enjoyment but the time comes when we look for waters further afield in which to try our skills.I think one of the charms of our sport is the variety and challenges that different waters can provide and there are often obvious sources to investigate. Yorkshire’s  Wharfe and Ure are much publicised and productive, as are Lancashire’s Ribble & Hodder, and I’m sure you can think of many more. The downside of these are often the price and availability as much of the best water is not easily accessible on day tickets.

I have a proposition to put to you:-

Why not join me for a visit to that best kept secret of traditional trout fishing, the CLYDE !

Whether your primary interest is wet fly, dry or both then the miles of  attractive, easily fishable water that this river provides will surely fit the bill.  From the upper reaches of Abington & Crawford, through the mid waters of Lamington, down to the lower stretches below Lanark, the variety of runs, riffles and pools is endless.

On some rivers much walking is involved between fishable stretches but on the Clyde, those fishy runs seem to go on for ever.

Excellent runs near Lamington

Clyde has a reputation as a big trout river and the natural browns can be caught up to 5 lbs or more but a typical daytime session is likely to yield fish between a half and one & a half pounds – they are profusely spotted and fight like hell ! As darkness falls, the monsters come out to play and this is when we use traditional “gloaming “ patterns.

a Clyde beauty!

You would be based near to Biggar & Thankerton and is only 15 minutes from Junction 12 on the A74. The accommodation is at ANGLERS HOLIDAY COTTAGES which nestle at the foot of Tinto Hill ( hill of fire). www.anglersholidaycottages.co.uk – owners John & Gwen Reid.

Due to available accomodation we are limiting the number of participating anglers to 4. This number also suits the logistics of fishing as only John and I will be guiding you and want to offer the most personal attention necessary or desired. John has a huge fund of local knowledge which will be put to good use to ensure the best sport possible for you !

The duration of the trip will be 3 fishing days and the all inclusive cost is £250

We intend to run this twice in the season on JUNE 2/3/4 and AUGUST 4/5/6

These periods will be highly productive and allow the chance for excellent “gloaming fishing”.

These dates are Monday to Wednesday and should you care to arrive on the Sunday, then you can try your luck in the evening with the wild trout in Lochs Lyoch & Cleugh which are also owned by John. These dates coincide with hatches of the biggest sedges I’ve ever seen which the very large trout take with a vengeance well into darkness!

a serious brownie!

The browns are all wild fish and supplemented by the superbly conditioned rainbows that John rears in his on-site rearing pens. Expect fish to 10lbs with a high average size. Even if you are really only coming up to fish the river, these lochans will be an interesting diversion.

Suggested itinerary: beats dependant on weather/river conditions.

First day:
Introduction to Upper Reaches, Abington/Crawford area
.

Fishing between 9.00 and midnight with pre-arranged breaks for meals. This allows time for the traditional “gloaming” fishing, when the biggest trout feed.
Fishing times can be adjusted to suit conditions and your requirements.

Second day:
fish Lamington area, both day & evening sessions.

Third day:
Lower sections from Lanark downstream. Leaving direct from the water to travel home.

Tackle will be available should it be required and I think it’s part of the experience to use the traditional sparsely dressed Clyde Style flies. These can also be supplied.

Where once fly fishing generally applied to game fish, those days are clearly gone. Now we are aquiring the knowledge and tackle which allows us to chase sea bass, chub, barbel, carp and especially pike.

Our distance from the sea may perhaps put bass out of reach but I’m sure we all live close enough to non trout rivers & pools to make the other species a real option. I’ve been having great fun with pike in the last year or so and although that monster still eludes me, the number of small to medium fish caught has truly wet my appetite.

As part of the services I offer, I am now including pike tuition which could take place on perhaps the lower Dee, the Severn, the Ellesmere lakes, Llyn Bran above Denbigh or in fact, anywhere you normally fish that hold pike. Maybe you’re in a club with good pike pools.

It’s true that many trout anglers are taking up this challenge as a diversion but I would suggest that many coarse anglers would get a great deal of satisfaction from catching pike on a fly as opposed to the normal methods. I’ve fished for pike all my life with either plugs or natural dead bait with “sink & draw” and I truly prefer the fly. Even jacks will give a good account of themselves on a fly rod.

The most obvious difference to start with is the tackle which is substantially heavier than trout. If the rod doesn’t have enough backbone then it’s very difficult to set the hook and then to control a very upset pike. Casting the often very large flies effectively is also compromised if the rod is too weak.

I use a set up which seems typical these days and starts with a rod of 9 ft, rated #9, I favour the Greys Platinum XD to which I attach a salmon sized reel loaded with a #9 weight forward line. Some of my friends use 10 ft rods with a #10 line & this certainly works well – you need to see what suits you.

The line is very important and a heavy trout or salmon line just won’t do. There are several specialist lines on the market and I suggest you look carefully – some are specific to pike and some to saltwater.

David Wolsencroft- Dodds , who writes regularly in Flyfishing & Flytying, is considered the leading exponent of pike fly fishing  and in most situations will recommend a floating line. This is perhaps surprising when a lot of bait fishing takes place on the bottom but pike are quite prepared to take lures near the surface. In fact, some of the best waters are only a few feet deep so there is no doubt that the lure will be seen.

I therefore recommend a floater but on occasions, a sink tip is useful to counteract strong wind as you need to keep the fly in line with your rod, not bowing sideways.

Lures can be made or bought and a huge range isn’t necessary. What is important though is having the casting skills to put that big fly where the pike are – they’re not always in the middle and often close in but you still need to be able to cast a reasonable distance.

excellent colours

If you’ve never cast a fly before or your normal trout techniques don’t include it then I can teach you how to “double haul”. It’s a cast basically designed for distance but with regards to pike , it is used to put sufficient energy into the cast to turn that big fly over.

If you would like to try it then give me a call – don’t worry if you don’t have the tackle at present because I can provide it.
